RESEARCH'
Inaugural IGU-LUCC Study Group Symposium
(The Special Programme for Young Researchers commences on July 2 at the Australian Centre of the Asian Spatial Information and Analysis Network (ACASIAN)
The principal issues to be addressed at the first IGU-LUCC Study Group
Open
International Symposium in Brisbane pertain to land use and land cover data
sources, standards for classification, appropriate scales for national and
regional databases, and the utility/compatibility of various technologies
and software. Academic paper sessions and workshops addressing these
issues will be held on both days of the symposium, and there will also be
demonstrations of GIS land use databases for China at the Australian
Centre of the Asian Spatial Information and Analysis Network, Faculty of
Asian and International Studies, Griffith University, the Symposium host.
THEMES FOR THE IGU-LUCC'97 OPEN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM:
Papers/presentations for IGU-LUCC'97 are invited on the following themes:
1. Sources for regional and national information bases
THEMES FOR THE IGU-LUCC STUDY GROUP SESSIONS AT THE CSRS
CONFERENCE:
An IGU-LUCC Study Group contingent of fifteen will be incorporated in
the
CSRS Conference in Armidale, NSW, where sessions on the processes and forces
producing land use and land cover changes and their relation to agricultural
sustainability will be held.
Papers are invited on the following themes:
1. Processes and causes of land use/cover changes
PARTICIPATION IN THE IGU-LUCC'97 OPEN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
AND CSRS CONFERENCE
Attendance at the IGU-LUCC'97 Open International Symposium is, as the
title
implies, open to anyone who wishes to participate and who sends timely
notification of their intention to come as instructed below.
However, the IGU-LUCC contingent at the Commission for Sustainability
of
Rural Systems IGU'97 International Conference hosted by the University of
New England is strictly limited to fifteen participants. Those who might
otherwise attend that conference independently of the IGU-LUCC should apply
separately to the organisers at: IGU97@metz.une.edu.au (A/Prof. Tony
Sorensen or Roger Epps, Department of Geography and Planning, UNE,
Armidale, NSW 2351, AUSTRALIA. FAX +61 (0) 67 73 30 30)
ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE IGU-LUCC'97 OPEN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM:
Attendance at the IGU-LUCC'97 Open International Symposium by twenty-five
participants is envisioned, but more can be accommodated with sufficient
advance notice. Those interested in attending should provide the
information requested below, including the title of any proposed papers,
by
the end of April, 1997. It is not expected that everyone attending will
present a paper, and only fifteen to twenty will be scheduled.
Venue for the IGU-LUCC'97 Symposium:
The Nathan Campus of Griffith University is located in Toohey Forest,
ten
minutes from the Brisbane city centre by freeway but worlds apart in
ambience. Because of the semi-isolated locale, meals will be provided for
symposium participants staying in University accommodation. More luxurious
accommodation in the city or nearer to the University is available, and
information on it can be provided but it will need to be arranged
privately.
Accommodation, Meals, and Transport to join the CSRS Conference:
INTERESTED?

IGU-LUCC contingent at the subsequent CSRS Conference in Armidale, should
provide the information requested below by the end of April, 1997.
Proposals for papers should be accompanied with abstracts of 100 to 200
words.
A preliminary program, notice of acceptance of papers and a schedule of
the
dates by which registration and accommodation fees must be received will
be
sent to respondents in May, 1997.

BACKGROUND:
INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHICAL UNION LAND USE AND LAND COVER
STUDY GROUP
A new IGU Study Group on Land Use and Land Cover Change has recently been
established (96.SG06). The intention of the Study Group is to direct
research efforts to data and models which pertain to the middle range
between the more common, strictly local studies and those which attempt to
address abstract global phenomena. Therefore, the principal focus of the
IGU-LUCC Study Group will be national or regional-level research with
historical depth of decades to centuries that will contribute substantively
to country-level, regional, and eventually even hemispheric or world-wide
research on observed changes in land use and land cover.
The IGU-LUCC Study Group intends to work closely with the Core Project
Office of the Land Use/Cover Change (LUCC) Programme, jointly established
by
the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) of the International
Council of Scientific Unions and the International Human Dimensions
Programme (IHDP) of the International Social Science Council, in order to
promote international research on land use and land cover change.
One of the activities of the new IGU-LUCC Study Group is to sponsor
international symposia on a yearly basis. The first will be held at
Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, on the third and fourth of
July, 1997.
Another activity of the Study Group is to promote cooperation with related
IGU Commissions and Study Groups. Therefore the schedule for the IGU-
LUCC'97 Symposium will allow those attending to also join the IGU
Commission on Sustainability of Rural Systems International Conference
hosted by the University of New England, Armidale, NSW, Australia, on the
5th to the 12th of July, 1997, which will include an IGU-LUCC Study Group
joint session. Information on the CRSR IGU97 Conference can be requested
from: IGU97@metz.une.edu.au
The IGU-LUCC Study Group welcomes suggestions for corresponding members,
including self-nominations. Those interested in contributing to the Study
Group should contact the Chair:
Professor Yukio Himiyama

Brisbane has an area population of over one million and is the capital
of
Queensland, the state that occupies the north eastern quadrant of the
continent. There are mountain rain forests, extensive ocean beaches, giant
sand islands, and Australian faunal displays in the near vicinity of
Brisbane, and those attending the symposium are welcome to arrive early in
order to enjoy the city and its surroundings. The weather in early July
can be expected to be dry with daytime temperatures in the low twenties,
falling into the teens at night.
Accommodation in single-bed student dormitory rooms, plus breakfast,
will
cost under A$43 per night. Inexpensive meals will be available on campus
for those arriving on the 2nd of July, or earlier. During the two days of
the Symposium, lunch on campus and dinner at a nearby restaurant, including
transportation, will be included in the registration fees, which will be
A$100 for each of the two days. Symposium-organised bus transport on July
5th to Coffs Harbour, NSW, for those attending the IGU CSRS Conference
hosted by the University of New England will be available for as little as
A$25-40, depending on the numbers requiring it.
